Director’s Statement
This project began as a unique opportunity to document the making of a roots-music album, but it quickly became something much larger. Utilizing a fly-on-the-wall, cinema verité approach, our crew spent over a month embedded inside John Mellencamp’s private recording studio. As the 2003 invasion of Iraq began dominating the news cycles, we watched the music transform. The album became a vessel for political commentary and a reflection on American patriotism, creating an intense, intimate convergence of music and history as it happened.
